FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
More than 20 victims allege negligence by power company for fire that burned 32 square miles
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. (January 13, 2020) – Singleton Law Firm, a leading California fire litigation law firm, recently filed a lawsuit against Liberty Utilities Co. for its negligence in causing last month’s Mountain View Fire in Northern California. The firm represents more than 20 victims of the fire that burned more than 32 square miles, damaged or destroyed more than 80 structures, and caused multiple injuries including at least one death.
According to the lawsuit, the fire started when electrical powerlines owned and operated by Liberty Utilities slapped together in high winds, causing arcing that ignited nearby vegetation. The lines slapped together because Liberty elected to install non-insulated metal conductors and then failed to properly maintain and inspect them. After the fire, Liberty replaced the non-insulated conductors with insulated ones which, if they had been in place prior to the fire, would have prevented it from occurring.
Gerald Singleton, the founding partner of Singleton Law Firm and one of the most experienced fire attorneys in California, stated, “The cause of the Mountain View Fire is clear: Liberty failed to install the correct type of electrical conductor and then failed to properly inspect and maintain them. As a result of their negligence, at least one person died and over 100 people lost their homes.” Singleton stressed that this is not a class action. “Although we represent multiple clients, each case is worked up and resolved separately, and each individual has the right to settle their case or go to trial.”
The Singleton Law Firm, which is undergoing a name change to Singleton Schreiber McKenzie & Scott, LLP, has over 100 employees and has offices throughout California. In the past two decades, Mr. Singleton and his team have represented more than 10,000 victims of utility fires, in multiple states, and has recovered approximately $1 billion in settlements and verdicts for its clients. The firm currently represents thousands of victims of the 2020 Mountain View and Zogg Fires, the 2019 Kincade Fire, the 2018 Woolsey and Camp Fires, the 2017 Thomas and North Bay Fires, and the 2015 Butte Fire.
